The Foundation of the Trade FairIn the early 1920s, Cologne’s Lord Mayor Konrad Adenauer was the driving force behind the foundation of a trade fair company in Cologne. The construction of the fairgrounds was estimated to cost 150 million German marks. It took another two years before the first spring fair opened its gates on May 11, 1924 at the new Köln-Deutz fairgrounds in the presence of then President of the Reich, Friedrich Ebert, and Chancellor of the Reich, Wilhelm Marx. This first fair event in Cologne was not just a complete success, it also established the reputation of the new fair as a top fair location. Cologne as a business location.Germany’s fourth-largest city is also the centre of Europe’s biggest economic cluster and a hub of the European transport network. It offers you unique global connections: around 180 million Europeans are only an hour away by plane and they generate about 40 per-cent of Europe’s entire GDP. The Cologne region is home to companies from the insurance and financial sectors as well as the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. In addition to being the leading centre of the automotive industry, it has nine TV stations, 100 TV studios, production firms, newspaper companies and book publishers – making it the top location for media and the games industry. Exciting and cosmopolitanCologne’s real hallmark is the people who live here. Tolerant, cosmopolitan and hospitable, they give this cathedral city its special flair. And this metropolis of one million inhabitants also fascinates visitors with its cultural offerings. There’s a wealth of museums, theatres and art galleries. And you can sample the “Cologne way of life” in the city’s many restaurants, pubs and breweries. Whichever part of the world you’re coming from, Cologne offers you an attractive business environment and many ways to relax after a busy and successful day at the fair. |
